Backpacker's Homestay Hostel Dialogue / Script

Dialogues are great, especially when phrasal verbs are used.
Adapt this with your student to discuss phrasal verbs. The subject is about discussing accommodation and responsibilities, such as a cleaning roster for the hostel, but you can adapt it to any situation.

You can either give the sheet as homework to your student and ask them to guess what the phrasal verbs mean, or you can role play. Then discuss the phrasal verbs as you encounter them.

You may need to change some words to make it more relevant for a discussion in your country.

Dialogue 03 - Backpackers and Homestay Hostels
Joan:  Did you hear? Jack is now acting as the landlord until the real landlord comes back.
Suzy:  No! Really? I don’t really agree with that. He may act on a lot of the recommendations he’s made over
the past few months.
Joan:  Like what?
Suzy:  A cleaning roster for example. I didn’t approve of one before and I’m certainly not asking for one now.
Joan:  You might need to argue him out of it. I think he’s pretty determined to attend to any problems.
Suzy:  We could always strike! Threaten not to pay the rent until he backs off.
Joan:  That won’t work. He believes in what he’s doing and I don’t think this will blow over. We might be
able to beat him down on a couple of things but I don’t think he’ll brush aside his ideas so easily.
Suzy:  Can we call the original landlord back? Maybe he’ll call on someone else to carry out his instructions?
Joan:  He’s already in Japan. And Jack had coaxed him into giving him the job anyway.
Suzy:  We need to come up with a plan...
Jack:  Hi guys!
J/S:  Hi Jack.
Suzy:  What’s the latest?
Jack:  I need to confide in someone. I don’t think the landlord is coming back!!!
J/S:  What???
Jack:  He couldn’t really cope with running a homestay backpacker’s service so he’s dropped out of the
hostel business altogether. I was happy to engage in this for a few weeks but not for months or years. I’ve got to get back to London in a few months.
Joan:  Oh My God!
Suzy:  Do you think he’ll sell?
Jack:  Possibly. But the instructions he’s given me are fairly specific. He drummed into me the importance of
keeping the place clean, and said that some ‘special’ visitors will be calling in at a certain time in the
future to ‘have a look around’. Sounds like he wants to sell or get people to run it for him.
Suzy:  What are we going to do?
Joan:  Well, you know, I’ve been pretty serious about cleaning rosters and noise reduction and...
Suzy:  Yeeeesssss...
Joan:  But if the place is going to go over to someone else, I don’t really care. Let’s party!
J/S:  Cool!
