Buying a New or Used Car Dialogue / Script

The subject is about discussing and considering the options in regards to buying a new or used car or vehicle from an auto dealer.
Dialogues are great, especially when phrasal verbs are used. Adapt this with your student to discuss phrasal verbs.

You can either give the sheet as homework to your student and ask them to guess what the phrasal verbs mean, or you can role play. Then discuss the phrasal verbs as you encounter them.

You may need to change some words to make it more relevant for a discussion in your country.

Dialogue 5. Buying a Car
Shark:  How can I help you, madam?
Dorri:  I’d like to buy a new or used car that fits my budget. I’m not looking for anything fancy and I don’t want a rental car.
Shark:  How about this one? It’s a perfect buy, madam. It was driven by a little old lady on Sundays and is really the cream of the crop. It’s crying out for a worthwhile owner.
Dorri:  Hmm, I’m not sure. You say the little old lady drove this red Ferrari to church?
Shark:  Yes, she indulged in some very expensive hobbies but really didn’t use it that much.
Dorri:  Well, I’ll have to mull it over. I was thinking of a second hand car that was a bit less ostentatious. Like a Holden or a Ford. Not a sports car and not a 4-wheel drive.
Shark:  How about this one? You could invest in this classic 1968 Mini Minor. Doesn’t it just leap out at you!?! Silver trim, classic style. Insurance and finance are good. And we’ve only recently marked down the price. It’s been well looked after but the owner moved overseas so had to leave behind his pride and joy.
Dorri:  I’ll note the details but I don’t think it will rank among the rest. We live in a hilly district and Mini’s are notorious for not being able to climb hills.
Shark:  Okay. This is the last one that fits your specs. It’s a Holden Barina. I’ll be direct with you about this one. It didn’t measure up to the previous owner’s expectations. We laughed this one off but the wife of the husband said that the number plate was bad luck. The husband had to walk away from it.
Dorri:  You’re kidding! ‘FOR 449’, what’s wrong with that number plate?
Shark:  Ha ha! I’m serious! That’s the reason why it has its for sale sign up. Otherwise it’s barely had any mileage and it’s in perfect condition.
Dorri:  Okay, I’ll talk it over with my husband. The price looks to be close to our budget and it looks like a good deal. I’ll see if we can scrape together some extra cash. We may take up the offer if my husband settles for it.
Shark:  Great! Just one question, is your husband Australian too?
Dorri:  No, he’s from China.
Shark:  Ah.
