Touring the World Dialogue / Script

The subject is about discussing where students have been traveling and backpacking around the world.
Dialogues are great, especially when phrasal verbs are used. Adapt this with your student to discuss phrasal verbs.

You can either give the sheet as homework to your student and ask them to guess what the phrasal verbs mean, or you can role play. Then discuss the phrasal verbs as you encounter them.

You may need to change some words to make it more relevant for a discussion in your country.

Dialogue 8
Touring the World
Mick:  So, what countries have you taken in?
Rose:  Oh, the usual. English, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, USA etc. I’d love to go back to the Czech Republic and while away some time there, if only for the absinthe!
Mick:  You know that it’s now either illegal or restricted in just about every country except the Czech Republic? I found out that Vincent Van Gogh was an absinthoholic, which is why he cut off his ear!
Rose:  True. But after the black outs and hallucinations and the days of sickness you get used to it!
Mick:  Ha ha. No thanks. Okay, have you been to any Asian countries?
Rose:  Does Australia count? Seriously, I’ve visited Indonesia, Singapore, China and Japan. What about you?
Mick:  I’ve travelled around Australia and New Zealand but that’s about it.
Rose:  That’s more than me! Even though I visited those countries, I was there for only a day or two. I didn’t
feel up to spending more time than necessary. I also didn’t want to fork out too much money. Europe was very expensive when I went and I hadn’t geared towards spending that amount. I couldn’t believe how expensive Venice was. How could they get away with charging $10 for a glass of coke? So you exploring Australia, that’s pretty cool.
Mick:  Yeah, but I took the easy way – a cruise around Australia where everything was done for you and all you needed to do was decide which tour to show up for every morning
Rose:  I probably couldn’t do something like that. I went around Europe with Stray Travel which was an adventure. Probably couldn’t get through something like that now. I’d give out pretty quickly and would want to get out of the regular pub crawls. I’ve grown out of it but I’m not yet ready for cruises.
Mick:  This was an under 35s cruise.
Rose:  Ah. Hmm, maybe I could do that.
Mick:  Are there any countries you’d love to head for but haven’t got around to yet?
Rose:  If someone puts up the money I’d love to go to Brazil, Russia, Canada, Alaska and Egypt. I really want to see the relics of ancient civilizations like Machu Picchu and the Pyramids. But that’s all in the future. I’m going to have to put off any future trips for a long while.
Mick:  Why is that?
Rose:  I put in for a transfer to another department as I’ve put on weight working as a desk jockey. So I’ll have to work in the new department for a year before I take holidays. But the other big thing is that I’ve got to put away some dosh to pay off my credit card!
Mick:  Ah. Yeah. I’m with you there. Totally!
