Test
Yourself!
An Australian wants to talk to you.
Can you understand her?
"Hey. You'll never guess what
happened this arvo. I'd just chucked a u-ee down George Street, done the
dogleg near Paddys, and grabbed the parking possie just near the rego office.
Almost missed the boat there cos another car tried to snap up the spot.
I'd figured it was Murphy's law if I did miss out but the other sucker
stalled and I was in like Flynn, a perfect fit and Bob's yer Uncle. (I'd
taken a sickie as I'd heard that there was a sale underway at Paddy's Markets.) |
"When I got in, there were hundreds
of sales. It was mind-boggling. I thought I had Buckley's of getting what
I wanted cos there were tons of people everywhere. I had my old bags as
I thought they'd come in handy but straight away found that everyone gave
them out as freebies.
"I headed to the fruit and veggies,
having a captain cook for some taters. Found that they weren't up to scratch
and so I couldn't make up my mind. But then, as luck would have it, a new
stall opened!
I was able to kill two birds with
one stone as they had everything I wanted. I real bewdy, bonza stall. You've
got to check it out! They're right at the back on the left.
"Catch ya"
How did
you go?
If you had problems with any of the
words in this example then you probably need some help if you wish to communicate
with Australians on a casual conversation level.
